We helped squash the target!

Created: Dec 17 2019

Aged 8 to 82, our squash champions came from all walks of life armed with rackets, enthusiasm and varying degrees of ability for the Squash Squared Cup 2019, the charity’s biggest and most important fundraiser. Each team was targeted with raising £1,500 to ensure that Squash Squared could reach out to more children and continue to support those enroled in the program into the New Year.

Ten teams of six players slugged it out, with a former world number five and a current world number 20 in the mix, playing two rounds of ten-minute matches each. Some matchups were biblical in stature, with an eight years old Soleste, facing off against our very own Jonathan standing at 6’4 tall. Many from our finance department had not played squash before and were lulled into a false sense of security by older opponents or the friendly camaraderie of colleagues.

In spite of the psychological game-play and hi-octane energy, nearly ending some of our young financiers’ careers, the squash was good fun and the members, supporters, families, friends and sponsors had a great time socialising afterwards in a full clubhouse.

Not only was it fun but the teams and supporters helped to squash the target and raised £17,388, with a further £500 – £1,000 promised, ensuring that more than 120 children will receive tuition, squash training, meals and all-round pastoral care for the year ahead.

Strawberry Star got involved with Squash Squared in 2018 through our Bronze development in Wandsworth, a new icon in the area that blends the heritage of its copper mill past with today’s thriving, hip community. Our aspiration to build homes and communities married well with those of Squash Squared – building character, confidence, community, and lasting change.
